What is senior living?

Senior Living, referred to as Assisted Living in Arkansas, offers a housing alternative for older adults who require oversight of their well being. The potential senior living/ assisted living resident may also require assistance with personal care, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, medications, ambulating and managing incontinence. These individuals do not require the intensive medical care provided in nursing homes.

Licensing requirements for vary from state to state. Some states have more than one level of senior living/assisted living licensure, and that licensing level determines what services are provided in a particular care home.

Aside from assisting with residents’ health care management and monitoring, these residences provide socialization. Many older adults lack this important feature in their own homes, especially as their mobility decreases, their circle of friends narrows, and their energy is expended by managing their daily routine.

What services are typically provided?

Residents usually have their own apartments, although some have shared accommodations. A support staff is provided, along with meals, housekeeping and laundry services. In addition to assisting with personal care, most have recreational activities and provide transportation.

How does senior living/assisted living differ from independent living and nursing home care?

Independent living typically provides housing, along with some supportive services designed to alleviate the burden of maintaining a house. Such services may include maintenance of the building and grounds, housekeeping and an optional meal program. Independent living residents must be able to care for themselves, without assistance from staff.

Nursing homes provide care for individuals needing substantial assistance with their personal care or who need skilled services. Such services might include physical, occupational, and speech therapy, a complicated medication regimen, wound care, and assistance for those who are bedfast and/or cannot communicate their needs.
